How to help support the Children Of Watamu Charity
Reg. Charity No.1098731

orphaned boy
We are always asked how people can help the children of Watamu Charity. We appreciate any size donation and offers of help. This page will give you a quick overview of various ways of helping. Since Sue started the charity with your help she has raised funds and built three schools for 700 children, with a library of 15,000 books , and a computer room. So much has been done in a short period of time and the Children Of Watamu are reaping the benefits of many generous people. We have shown we can with your support make the children smile. Individuals, Families, School and businesses have and can get involved Of course we encourage people to visit the area to see the work that has been completed and is being carried out at the school and for the community. The money raised goes to making a better life for the children and their community.
Listed below are the main areas we need your support with.

"Happy House" Project

Happy house projectThis is the main drive and funds are desperately required. The Happy House is for children orphaned by malaria, Aids and other diseases. These children have been identified and urgently need our help. Due to a generous donation of land by Grandpa Yaa and funds already raised the work has started. The plans are drawn, land cleared and fenced with the building work to start in August. We need to raise £200,000 to complete the project. Can you help? do you know a company that can help with sponsorship?

More details about the happy house project can be found on this page

Sponsored Child Scheme at SDA School, Watamu

Over the past eight years we have worked very hard at our Sponsored Child Scheme. We are delighted with the response and success if this scheme. Over half the population at school now have sponsors. All the Kindergarten children who need sponsors now have them. The primary section is very well supported. The Secondary School also has many people who sponsor 50% of the school fees. This we feel gives the incentive to the older students and their parents to support their own lives, and be partly responsible for their own destiny.  'Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he feeds himself for life.'

This scheme will always be a great part of our work, but we must now move on to the future Happy House Kids. The orphans at school who are being cared for by relatives, siblings or just neighbours in conditions that are often very unsatisfactory will become Happy House Kids. Many other children who will come to the Happy House will be babies whose mothers have died in childbirth, from HIV, Aids or malaria. Some of the children who are at this moment sleeping rough begging for food, with no hope of tomorrow. These are the children we must now turn our attention to. Children who have nothing and no-one.........except us.... ...and now you.

Please set up a monthly  standing order for £10 or £20 it will help us to buy everything needed for one child. When the Happy House is up and running the monthly donation will then be used to provide  the day to day needs of the child you will  be introduced to you through pictures and email. Regular updates will be sent of the child that you are saving from a life of poverty and despair. You will see your child grow to be a Happy healthy confident child who will hold their head high and be so proud to say ‘I am a Happy House Kid ‘

The monthly payment can be made here on the site via  Justgiving. or by a monthly standing order from your bank. A form for the bank can be obtained via email from Sue who can also give you lots more information regarding your sponsorship. E-mail  Please visit our Wish List you may wish to sponsor a child as a present for a loved one.

Kids Need Text Books

buy school booksThe Primary section of the school needs text books for the children to follow the National Ciriculem. Some have been bought by parents and sponsors but unfortunately most of the local people just can't afford the books, especially now after all the problems after the elections. Watamu has not seen any violence but the effect it has had on our community is lack of tourists, which causes hardship and unemployment.

The books cost £3 each, we don't need one per child, two can share. Please help us. Our kids need these books. If kids can read kids can learn.

Buy a Bike - Watamu Bicycle Brigade

buy bikes for children

The success of our Watamu Bicycle brigade has been fantastic!! More than half the school population is now mobile.

We started the scheme by buying bicycles for the children who had the furthest to walk, in some instances children were walking for over an hour. We then went on to the orphans who would never have the opportunity to own a bicycle. We are now delighted to say all the children that needed a bike to get to school now have one.

The bicycles were bought locally at a cost of around £30, so many bicycles being bought helped the local economy tremendously. The bikes were ordered through a local man called Abel. The bikes were delivered to his small shop flat packed from Mombassa. He employed 6-10 young men every time a delivery was made to assemble the bikes and check they were completely safe for our new young cyclists. The mechanics came into school to teach the older children how to service and maintain the bikes of the little ones. Malindi traffic police came and gave the children road safety lessons.

We feel now we have completed the bicycle scheme and need to move on to the needs of the future Happy House Kids. We have a Wish List here on the site. Please have a look and see if you would like to buy an item from you or to a loved one. The payment can be made through JustGiving A thank you email will be sent containing a link to a certificate that can be personalised and printed to keep or give to who ever the gift was for.
