How to help support the Children Of Watamu Charity
Reg. Charity No.1098731

orphaned boy
We are always asked how people can help the children of Watamu Charity. We appreciate any size donation and offers of help. This page will give you a quick overview of various ways of helping. Since Sue started the charity with your help she has raised funds and built three schools for 700 children, with a library of 15,000 books , and a computer room. So much has been done in a short period of time and the Children Of Watamu are reaping the benefits of many generous people. We have shown we can with your support make the children smile. Individuals, Families, School and businesses have and can get involved Of course we encourage people to visit the area to see the work that has been completed and is being carried out at the school and for the community. The money raised goes to making a better life for the children and their community.
Listed below are the main areas we need your support with.

"Happy House" Project

Happy house projectThis is the main drive and funds are desperately required. The Happy House is for children orphaned by malaria, Aids and other diseases. These children have been identified and urgently need our help. Due to a generous donation of land by Grandpa Yaa and funds already raised the work has started. The plans are drawn, land cleared and fenced with the building work to start in August. We need to raise £200,000 to complete the project. Can you help? do you know a company that can help with sponsorship?

More details about the happy house project can be found on this page

Sponsored Child Scheme at SDA School, Watamu

Many children in Watamu are being cared for by relatives, siblings or just neighbours. This is often a due to the number of children who become orphaned due to diseases such as Aids, Malaria and other diseases. We set up the sponsored child scheme to help these children. The cost of sponsoring a child is just £200 a year. A child who has a sponsor will receive two meals a day at school, two sets of school uniform, a pair of shoes and a school bag.

Sponsors receive regular updates on their child, photos and where appropriate exam results. The older children may also keep in touch by letter or email.

If you feel that you could sponsor a child and provide it with a better future, please email Sue who will be able to tell you all the options of sponsorship. The children are chosen by need.  Payment can be made once a year, or by monthly standing order. E-mail

Kids Need Text Books

buy school booksThe Primary section of the school needs text books for the children to follow the National Ciriculem. Some have been bought by parents and sponsors but unfortunately most of the local people just can't afford the books, especially now after all the problems after the elections. Watamu has not seen any violence but the effect it has had on our community is lack of tourists, which causes hardship and unemployment.

The books cost £3 each, we don't need one per child, two can share. Please help us. Our kids need these books. If kids can read kids can learn.

Buy a Bike - Watamu Bicycle Brigade

buy bikes for childrenWe are constantly looking to expand our Watamu Bicycle Brigade. In Watamu, school begins at 7am and many of the children have a very long walk to get there. In some instances this can be a trek for an hour or more. The sun doesn't always shine in Watamu; in the rainy season the rain comes with a vengeance and a child gets very wet when walking for an hour.
By having a bike it makes such a difference to the children.
The bicycles are bought locally at a cost from about £30 each. In allocating bikes priority is given to orphans and those having to travel furthest to school.
