Two sisters Louise and Charlotte Anderson both attend the Lytham College. Their Mother Catherine Anderson is a teacher at Heyhouses Primary School, St Annes. Class 6 under the expert supervision of Mrs Anderson have supported our work for the last few years. Children raise their own funds to sponsors Lulu and Juma at our school in Watamu. So I was delighted to be invited by Louise and Charlotte to share their fund raising ideas at the Lytham College. Last year the girls raised £76 towards our work with the children. In December 2007 I was invited to attend some assemblies the sisters had organised to make their fellow pupils aware of our work. A non-uniform day was arranged which rose a resounding £1094. This money has been used to sponsor 10 children in our Secondary School that opened in January 2008. We sponsored the children for 50% of the school fees, the parents will pay the other 50% We decided on this method of sponsorship to enable us to help more children.
Mrs Cherry Ridgway, Deputy Head at the Lytham College contacted me, Cherry was very interested in what we have achieved for the Children of Watamu and wanted to know how their college could help in more ways. It has now been decided that a 6th form school trip will be organised for July 2009 to take approximately 20 young people to Watamu on a working holiday. Links are going to be set up between the children of both schools. Funds will be raised to help finance the trip at the college. Four teachers will also be joining the group. This will be an ideal opportunity for all concerned to learn from each other.
Mrs Ridgway is determined that the pupils chosen to go on this very special trip are pupils who are sincerely interested in the Children of Watamu. Pupils who will return to college full of enthusiasm to share the experience of their trip with the younger students. Pupils who will go on to raise funds for Happy House and the Watamu School. It is intended to be a long-term commitment by the college towards the education of the children they have initially sponsored.
