2006 Charity Night

Our main Charity Night of the year was on Saturday 11th November at the Old Bridge Cabaret Bar, Lytham Road, Blackpool. The night was an enormous success, due to the terrific support we received from so many people.

On the night a total of £7,000 was raised and we are so grateful to everyone who helped us to achieve this amount. On the Saturday afternoon, 18 of our Friends from Ireland flew into Blackpool from Dublin to give their support. On the night they donated a cheque for 10,000 euros which was the remaining funds after the completion of their September 2006 project in Watamu.

Sponsors of some of our children, travelled from Warrington, Isle of Wight and

Southend-on-Sea to be with us.

The Abbey Bank have always given us great support and I am so pleased that many of their staff were able to attend. On the night we received a very generous donation of £2,500 from the Abbey.

Special thanks to Mike Oakley and Bernie Humphries who both had their heads shaved live on the night and thereby raised a fantastic £520.

Thanks also to Fay and the girls from Ego Hair and Beauty, Blackpool, for doing "the deed" and for also donating raffle prizes and for helping with the sale of raffle tickets.

Dave Wilson, Escape to Kenya, is a long standing supporter of the Charity and we were pleased that he could be with us.

During the evening it was announced that we desperately needed a generator for the school. In Watamu the power can sometimes be off for a couple of days and during this time the children miss out on their computer lessons. It is so disappointing for the kids when it comes their time for lessons and the power fails.

Immediately the generator issue was mentioned Dave and Phil Pitcher, another of our great supporters, came forward to say they would buy one.

Both Dave and Phil already sponsor children and have bought bicycles, Thanks Guys.

The raffle prizes we received were fantastic and included beauty and hair vouchers, fruit baskets, meat vouchers, bottles of wine and spirits etc. A Liverpool shirt signed by Robbie Fowler went up for  auction as did holidays in apartments owned by Trustees and Sponsors.

It was a great fun night with games, entertainment, raffles, dancing, etc and everyone  had a fantastic time.

I am delighted to say that we had 6 more children sponsored and a further 15 bicycles were bought, at £30 each, for our rapidly growing Bicycle Brigade.

This years main charity night is arranged for the 10th of November 2007. Tickets are £5 each. If you would like to join us for a great night, please ring Sue on 01253 352430 or email sue@childrenofwatamu.net We can also arrange accommodation. We look forward to hearing from you.
