Children of the World

The Primary section of the school needs text books for the children to follow the National Ciriculem. Some have been bought by parents and sponsors but unfortunately most of the local people just can't afford the books, especially now after all the problems after the elections. Watamu has not seen any violence but the effect it has had on our community is lack of tourists, which causes hardship and unemployment.
The books cost £3 each, we don't need one per child, two can share. Please help us. Our kids need these books. If kids can read kids can learn.
Maybe your school would like to help, can you class raise enough money to buy some text books for our children. We will send pictures of the happy children with the new books.
Before easter I was contacted by Olwen Evans from Cardiff, to day she would be visiting Watamu with her daughter Alana at Easter 2008. Olwen had £300 raised by the Fitzalan High School in Cardiff where she teaches, 146 books were purchased. Thanks Olwen, Alana children & staff.

A report from Fitzalan High School, Cardiff. Can you help? can you make a difference?
Fitzalan is a large inner-city multicultural school in the heart of Cardiff. I am an EMAS teacher within this school and have a close connection with Kenya. I have lived in Mombassa and Lamu for a while and have since visited Kenya annually with my daughter Alana. She has a lot of family and friends there!
In Fitzalan we have many new arrivals form all around the world. Some of these children that are taught in the teaching groups 7M 8M and 9M. They wanted to help the children in Kenya and therefore held a fundraising event.
The pupils decided on a charity they would like to support. They chose “Children of Watamu.”
On Friday the 18th of January the pupils served coffee and cake at lunchtime to staff. They also held a number of in-class events. They paid to watch DVD’s and “paid to play” PS2 games. All the pupils worked very hard and were delighted to have raised £400.
I visited Watamu during the Easter holidays to donate the
money on behalf of the children. WE went shopping in Malindi and bought loads of fabulous new textbooks.
Alana spent the day in Class 1 and had a Maths and English exam. She was rewarded with a delicious bowl of maharagwe and rice! – Lovely.
We had a fantastic welcome and hope to visit again soon!

7M, 8M and 9M were moved by the coverage on T.V. of the suffering of people in Kenya and wanted to hold a fundraising event.
On Friday the 18th of January they served coffee and cake at lunchtime to staff and held a number of in-class events. They all worked very hard and were delighted to have raised £314.20.
