Our Library

From the outset, one of our main aims was to open a library. With access to books, children and adults can be transported from the daily grind of poverty that they find themselves in.

library A child can be Harry Potter, a pirate cowboy, or a princess in a beautiful castle.

Adults come to look at the type of books they have never seen before. Atlases, dictionaries. Books of fact and fiction.

I saw a quote once it said ‘ If education is the road out of poverty the books are the vehicles that are needed’

Following my first visit to Watamu in 2000 the collection of books became a major task. Posters were placed in shop windows and contact made with publishers, schools etc. The response was absolutely fantastic and our collection covered children's books for all ages. Atlases, dictionaries, books of fact and fiction and  general reference books.

Thanks to the generosity of so many, by December 2003 we were able to ship out 3,500 books together with maps, posters, etc.

The library officially opened in February 2004, under our excellent librarian Samuel Yaa.

Further consignments were sent in 2005 and 2006 and at that point the library housed over 15,000 books.

The library now acts as a public library for other schools and the local community. They can sit and read there or take books home; a small registration fee is charged to cover the running costs.

The library has become a very special place in Watamu due to the dedication of Samuel Yaa.

Each classroom has books for the children to read between lessons.

The teachers have reference books to enable them to prepare for lessons.

The Watamu and Vitengeni schools both have sufficient books for their immediate needs.

Due to the high shipping costs involved we will not be sending more books for the time being but we will re-assess the situation this year.
