Sponsored Child Scheme

Many children in Watamu are being cared for by relatives, siblings or just neighbours. This is often a due to the number of children who become orphaned due to diseases such as Aids, Malaria and other diseases which these people have to contend with on a day to day basis.

During 2005/2006 we have been very active in organising and promoting our Sponsored Child Scheme. A child who has a sponsor will receive two meals a day at school, two sets of school uniform, a pair of shoes and a school bag. It is then more likely that Aunties or neighbours will watch out for these children as all they then need is a place to sleep. We know that much more is needed, of course it is, but at least these children are being fed and clothed for the time being.

The cost of sponsoring a child for one year is £200. Let us break that down into our lives, what does it equate to? ... £3.84 per week. Less than 2 pints of beer, a bottle of wine or a packet of cigarettes. How much is a birthday card these days or a bunch of flowers for a friend? That £3.84 per week can save a child from hunger by providing two meals a day and also also provide shoes and clothes. Our sponsorship arrangement also ensures that the child receives a full education which includes computer lessons and access to a library with 15,000 books. Through having a proper education this child will have the same chance as any other to rise out of poverty and to make their own path through life.

Sponsors receive regular updates on their child, photos and where appropriate exam results. The older children may also keep in touch by letter or email.

If you feel that you could sponsor a child and provide it with a better future, please email Sue who will be able to tell you all the options of sponsorship. The children are chosen by need.  Payment can be made once a year, or by monthly standing order. sue@childrenofwatamu.net

These are just 3 of the children of the 250 children who currently have sponsors.

Our next project is to build the Happy House for the many orphans in Watamu and the surrounding area. By doing this we can keep the children safe and  give them an education. I feel now that with half of the school population sponsored we can look towards the future Happy House Kids. The Sponsored Child Scheme is the financial underpinning of the school and it will continue to be so. Some of the children that are sponsored at school will be coming into the Happy House. Not only do we have to build it, it has to furnished, with beds table chairs everything is needed. Please visit our Wish List Page. When we open we have to feed and clothe the children, pay wages and the never ending bills. So I now think that must put our efforts and  sponsorships into the future Happy House Kids.  We hope to start building in September 2008, with the help of the British Royal Engineers. They will supply the man power and machinery and we need the funds for the materials. Do you feel that you could set up a monthly standing order or make a donation to support our fund raising efforts? We will need sponsors again when we are up and running. Your standing order will then used to sponsor one of our children. You will be sent details and photographs of your own particular child. We desperately need help to get these children in a safe place where they can go to sleep in a bed and wake up to a breakfast. A place they can live and grow in safety to be happy healthy children. Little girls have disappeared from the village. Where are these children? Are they still alive? In the UK a child goes missing it is headline news, in Watamu a child goes missing who notices? Well, it was an orphan. Please help us to take care of these very vulnerable at risk little kids. Some of these children are running naked and sleeping rough begging for food. When we tuck our children and grandchildren up in a nice clean bed with their favourite toy, can we imagine how these other children are coping with life in the daily grind of extreme poverty that they have been born into.

Please help us to help these children, we desperately need your help.
